Where to find a babysitter

So you’ve decided to start looking for a babysitter, but where do you start? For a parent looking for a babysitter for the first time, it can feel like a minefield and one which you would prefer to get across and out the other side in one piece.

SafeCircle have put together a list of ways to find a babysitter and some of their pros and cons to help get you started in thinking about what you’re looking for and where to go;

Recommendations from family and friends:

Pros: They are someone either you or a friend/family members knows of, giving a feeling of trust. If they are someone well known to your child this may assist in them feeling safe and settled.

Cons: They may be young, inexperienced or unqualified. If something was to go wrong whilst they cared for your child they are unlikely to be covered by insurance, and the incident may cause family rifts. They may also not be available when you need them.

Your child’s school, nursery or childminder:

Pros: The child is likely to know the individual and therefore will be more settled and feel safe and happy. Some will have a qualification in childcare or teaching and possibly a paediatric first aid and police check.

Cons: The nursery may have a policy against allowing staff to babysit for families at their setting. The babysitter will not be covered by the settings insurance policy.

Schools, nurseries and childminders not connected with your child:

Pros: The person may have a qualification in childcare and teaching, paediatric first aid and police checks depending on their position at the setting.

Cons: The setting may have a policy against allowing staff to babysit for families who approach them for such.

Social media:

Pros: This method is free to contact and find babysitters in the area as recommended by local people.

Cons: The local people in your area may not have the same standards in childcare as you, meaning you may find low quality babysitters which have come highly recommended to you. The individuals haven’t been checked by professionals for authenticity and skill level. Anyone can state they are a qualified professional online.

Search websites and Apps:

Pros: They are easy to use in searching for individuals and filter what you are looking for.

Cons: Even when using the filters you can find a list of thousands of potential babysitters to sift through. The individuals are not vetted by the app or website owners, and they take no responsibility for assisting in finding safe childcarers. Anyone can state they are a qualified professional online. Pricing for the use of a babysitter through apps can be varied depending on the type of childcare you want, how soon you need to book and the experience of the babysitter who sets their own hourly rate.

Nanny agency:

Pros: If the agency is using safer recruitment policies they will likely have only qualified individuals and will have met with them.

Cons: Their database of nannies who are also their babysitters is extensive and often out of date. They do not recheck their nannies unless placing them in new positions for nannying so some have no checks in over 5yrs, and will still be offered as a babysitter. They can be expensive despite often being no more thorough in their checks that the directory websites and apps.

Babysitting agency:

Pros: If the agency is using safer recruitment policies they will likely have only qualified individuals and will have met with them.

Cons: Their database of babysitters is usually extensive and often out of date, with many having left the childcare industry years ago and so do not have current police checks, paediatric first aid or childcare best practice knowledge. They do not recheck their babysitters once registered with them therefore babysitters can be sent out without checks in over 10yrs. They can be expensive despite often being no more thorough in their checks that the directory websites and apps.

Why is SafeCircle different?

With SafeCircle we take the safety of our member families and babysitters seriously and it is the core of what we do. Our babysitters are vetted against our Assurance Framework at the point of registration with us and we go further than any other babysitting agencies, websites or apps by ensuring we re-check every babysitter against our Assurance Framework every 3 years. Our Assurance Framework goes beyond the basic vetting checks to ensure that our babysitters match our ethos and the personality traits expected of a professional childcarer, meaning we have babysitters that children are waiting at the window to see.

Our high standards are maintained year after year, and this allows SafeCircle to say that we have the highest quality babysitters in our operating areas, giving parents the ability to book a babysitter and enjoy worry-free nights out. We believe that a truly worry-free night out can only come from having babysitters you can trust and our exclusively 5 star babysitting service achieves this on every booking.

SafeCircle applies regulation-level standards to the otherwise unregulated world of babysitting, for the protection of your family. Visit our website to find out more and see the babysitters in your area.
